A new report by a prominent minority advocacy group in Bangladesh has revealed a disturbing increase in communal violence following last year’s political upheaval. The Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council (BHBCUC) reported on Thursday that it recorded a staggering 2,442 incidents of communal violence over a period of 330 days, starting from August 4, 2024. This timeframe coincides with the height of political unrest that led to the ousting of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League government.
At a press conference held at the National Press Club in Dhaka, the report detailed the alarming nature of these incidents, which included murders, sexual assaults, attacks on places of worship, looting of homes and businesses, and the forced removal of minority community members from organisations.
The BHBCUC highlighted that these incidents, primarily targeting men, women, and adolescents from religious minority groups, have faced a disappointing lack of justice. The group’s leaders accused the interim government, headed by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Dr Muhammad Yunus, of either ignoring the scale of the violence or dismissing them as politically motivated incidents.
Monindra Kumar Nath, the acting general secretary of the council, stated that despite compelling evidence, the perpetrators have largely enjoyed impunity. He noted that authorities have been repeatedly accused of dismissing their concerns, emboldening the attackers. The council also pointed out that religious minorities, constituting about 10% of Bangladesh’s population, have been systematically excluded from the ongoing national reform initiatives, deepening their sense of insecurity and frustration.
The findings echo similar sentiments from other human rights organisations, which have also noted an increase in attacks against minorities in the power vacuum left by the collapse of the Awami League government.
