In a renewed push to bolster bilateral relations, Chinese Vice President Han Zheng on Monday invoked the metaphor of the “Dragon-Elephant Dance” during a meeting with Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar in Beijing, indicating a desire to deepen cooperation between the two Asian giants.
Referring to the 2023 meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Kazan, Han described it as a pivotal moment that helped restart and advance China-India ties. He emphasised that as major developing nations and key members of the Global South, China and India must “choose to be partners that support each other’s success”, noting that the “Dragon-Elephant Dance” remains the right path forward.
Han underscored the importance of implementing the consensus reached by the two leaders, urging both sides to maintain high-level engagement, promote practical cooperation, and respect each other’s core concerns to ensure the sustained, healthy, and stable development of bilateral ties.

In response, Jaishankar acknowledged that relations between India and China have seen steady progress since the Kazan meeting. He reiterated India’s commitment to upholding the leaders’ consensus and expressed willingness to enhance mutually beneficial cooperation and strengthen communication, particularly within multilateral platforms.
Jaishankar also extended India’s support to China, which holds the rotating presidency of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), in successfully hosting this year’s SCO Summit.
