The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has released new guidelines to prevent the misuse of Aadhaar numbers following the death of an individual. UIDAI recently deactivated 1.17 crore deceased people’s Aadhaar numbers in an effort to clean up its database.

It has also introduced a new service— “Reporting of Death of a Family Member” – on the myAadhaar Portal to assist existing Aadhaar cardholders in reporting the death of a family member.

The purpose of the initiative is to prevent the fraudulent use of the deceased’s Aadhaar number for purposes such as opening bank accounts, claiming subsidies, or receiving any other government benefits.

UIDAI has also advised Aadhaar users to register their family members’ deaths on the myAadhaar Portal following the acquisition of their death certificate from the local government. The new facility was introduced on June 9 on the myAadhaar Portal and officially announced on July 16, per The Economic Times.

The online service is accessible in 24 states and Union Territories that utilise the Civil Registration System. Moreover, UIDAI recently asked the Registrar General of India (RGI) to provide death records that are connected to Aadhaar IDs.

How to report death of a family member through myAadhaar portal

The first step is for families to obtain an official death certificate from the local authorities. Here are the steps to report the death of a family member through the official portal:

· Open the myAadhaar Portal on UIDAI using https://myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in/file-complaint

· Select the newly introduced option ‘Report Death of a Family Member.’

· Enter your OTP and Aadhaar number to log in.

· Enter the deceased person’s information, such as their Death Registration Number and Aadhaar number.

· Upload the death certificate obtained from the local government.

· Verify your relationship to the deceased.

· Complete the procedure and submit the self-declaration.

Following the appropriate procedure for verifying the data provided by the family member, the deceased person’s Aadhaar number will be deactivated by UIDAI.

In certain instances, UIDAI automatically deactivates the Aadhaar number without the family’s involvement once the system finds a match.

Furthermore, UIDAI is looking at the prospect of obtaining death records from banks and other Aadhaar ecosystem organisations that keep track of them. States are also receiving assistance from the Aadhaar-issuing agency in locating the holders of deceased Aadhaar numbers.

States are being given access to the demographic information of Aadhaar number holders who are above 100 years old as a pilot project to confirm that they are still alive. After receiving a verification report, the required validation will be completed before the Aadhaar number is deactivated.
