Indian-American entrepreneur Jay Chaudhry has made it to the list of Forbes’ richest immigrant billionaires in the United States. He is now among the 125 richest foreign-born citizens living in the country and holds the eighth position on the list. The 65-year-old, a resident of Reno, Nevada, is the only Indian on the top 10 list.

Who Is Jay Chaudhry?

Jay Chaudhry is the CEO of Zscaler, a cybersecurity firm that he founded in 2008. A decade after its launch, the company went public in 2018. Today, Jay and his family own about 40 per cent of the Nasdaq-listed company.

Jay Chaudhry’s Early Life and Education

Born in 1960, Jay’s journey began in a small Himalayan village in India. His native place had no electricity or running water while he was in school. Despite the challenges, he worked hard and gained admission to Banaras Hindu University (BHU), where he pursued a B.Tech degree from the IT-BHU, which is now known as IIT (BHU) Varanasi.

Jay moved to the United States in 1980 to attend graduate school, and that was also the first time he boarded a plane. There, he received his Master of Science degrees in electronic and computer engineering and industrial engineering and management from the University of Cincinnati. He has also studied at the prestigious Harvard Business School.

Jay Chaudhry’s Businesses

In 1996, the Indian-origin tech mogul and his wife, Jyoti, quit their regular jobs and used their savings to launch their first startup, SecureIT, a cybersecurity firm. As reported by Forbes, Jay founded four other tech companies before Zscaler. They were SecureIT, CoreHarbor, CipherTrust and AirDefense, all of which have now been acquired.

Today, Jay Chaudhry’s net worth stands at a whopping $17.9 billion, which is approximately Rs 1.49 lakh crore.

The Tesla founder, Elon Musk, who was born in South Africa, tops the list. Following him are Russian-born Google co-founder Sergey Brin, Taiwan-born Nvidia co-founder Jensen Huang, and Hungary-born entrepreneur Thomas Peterffy. Israel-born Miriam Adelson & family and Australia-born Rupert Murdoch & family have claimed the fifth and sixth positions, respectively.

Germany-born co-founder of PayPal, Peter Thiel, is seventh on the list, whereas Jan Koum, Ukraine-born co-founder of WhatsApp, and Kingston Technology CEO John Tu, born in China, are ninth and tenth on the list.
