Common requests concern garbage, recycling, drainage, traffic, sewer, and animal services. Depending on the issue, some calls may be transferred to another City department for resolution. 3-1-1 representatives may handle calls by providing information directly to the caller.
Other requests may be entered into the City’s interdepartmental computer system for further processing by the respective department.
3-1-1 does not dispatch any personnel for City departments, which is why they need as much information as possible to input into the service request within the system, which automatically routes to the relevant department. Each department dispatches its own personnel and vehicles, as needed, based on the request received.
Information 3-1-1 Call Center Representatives Need to Assist
Since 3-1-1 receives calls for most City departments, each department has its own criteria for the information they require. For any call requiring City services, such as water, sewer, streets, sanitation, etc., certain qualifying information is required. What questions may be asked are dependent on the service requested.
The most important information needed for any request for service is the address. Sometimes, on calls such as high weeds, a block number may be sufficient. On other calls, the operators may ask, “Do you see a business close to your location?” The more accurate the information, the faster and more efficiently the issue can be resolved with the least amount of time and resources.
Representatives have several tools at their disposal when taking requests to narrow down the location when an address is not available. They have the internet, Google Earth, and various maps available. On those rare occasions, that an accurate location cannot be determined, an operator may tell the caller that more information is required.
